Virginia is a Technology Center
Virginia has the highest percentage of technology workers in the country and ranked 5th in total high technology employment as reported in Cyberstates 2008.

The American Electronics Association's definition of technology includes both manufacturing and services industries, but clearly the services side dominates high technology employment in Virginia, with over half of high technology employment accounted for by Computer Systems Design & Related Services.

Education for the Technology Workforce
  • Seventy Virginia public and private institutions offer programs in information technology and related fields. These schools are well dispersed throughout the state with a heavier concentration in Northern Virginia, Richmond and the Hampton Roads regions.

  • Nearly 14,000 students were enrolled in information technology programs in the 2006-2007 academic year

  • More than 2,800 degrees and information technology certificates were awarded in the 2006-2007 academic year
